Under the authority of section 4 of the Executive Council Act and the Prerogative of the Crown, the Lieutenant Governor in Council is pleased to move that His Honour the Lieutenant Governor, by Commission under the Great Seal of the Province, appoint the Honourable Tom Rideout as the Deputy Premier, Attorney General, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Minister Responsible for Aboriginal Affairs and Government House Leader, with effect from January 19, 2007.  The responsibilities of the Attorney General, as outlined in section 4 of the Executive Council Act, include but are not limited to the following:

i) be the official legal Advisor of the Lieutenant Governor and the legal member of the Executive Council

ii) see that the administration of public affsirs is in accordance with law

iii) advise upon the legislative Acts and proceedings of the Legislature, and generally advise the crown upon all matter of law referred to the Attorney General by the Crown

iv) advise the heads of several departments of government upon all matters of law connected with those departments; and

v) have regulation and conduct of all civil litigation for and against the Crown
