Executive Council Act
Under the authority of sections 5 and 17 of the Executive Council Act, the Lieutenant Governor in Council is pleased to create an Agency within the Department of Municipal Affairs with responsibility for coordinating overall provincial efforts in the areas of both fire and emergency services, effective April 1, 2007. This Agency, to be known as Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador, is mandated to develop and maintain a fire and emergency management system in Newfoundland and Labrador to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to and recover from fires and other major emergencies and disasters. This Agency will incorporate the roles and mandates of the existing Emergency Measures Organization and Office of the Fire Commissioner. The Agency is to be led by a Chief Executive Officer with a direct reporting relationship to the Minister of Municipal Affairs with Responsibility for Emergency Preparedness. Subject to the availability of funds and classification by the Public Service Secretariat, approval was given to the proposed organizational structure of the Agency in accordance with the charts on file with the Public Service Secretariat.
